It came time to cull our flock - weed out some free loaders who are just eating and not laying, and in exchange get some tasty soup makings!
Good ways to tell if a chicken is not laying: dry, scaly & shriveled wattles & combs, bleached out legs ( yellow pigment in legs comes from production of the yolk), vents will be tight and dry, often they will have nicer looking feathers because a laying hen will be putting energy into her eggs instead of feathers.
A couple of the ones we culled did have eggs inside of them, pretty interesting to see their little factory - from an egg in a shell (pointed to in photo above) to ones the size of a pencil eraser, and everywhere in-between.
